Over to you Hattie…

Please introduce yourself:

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf and Limehouse - Hattie 2

My name is Hattie and I’m a Jack Russell with magnificent bat ears. I think I’m about 4 or 5 years old, but I’m not sure, as I was rescued by All Dogs Matter when I was around a year old. I came to live with my mum in Limehouse, East London in July 2016. I love living around here because we’re right by the Thames and also Regent’s Canal, so there’s lots of lovely river walks. We also live near several parks, including Greenwich Park and Victoria Park – both either a quick DLR or bus journey away.

What’s your favourite London Park and why?

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf and Limehouse - Hattie 1

I love our local park, Ropemaker’s Fields in the middle of Limehouse. It’s small but perfectly formed, and I love meeting all my doggie friends there. There is an abundant squirrel population too, so that’s an added bonus. From the park, I like to go for a walk around Limehouse Marina and give my mum the fright of her life by trying to jump on the narrowboats we walk past. I do love a boat!

Tell us a bit more about yourself?

I mainly like to sleep, eat, get cuddles off my favourite hoomans, and chase squirrels. I am also a big fan of cafés and pubs, so I’m the perfect repawter to guide you around my favourite dog-friendly establishments of Limehouse and Canary Wharf. You can find me on my mum’s Instagram account at @shabbaroonie.

Why do you like No. 35 Mackenzie Walk / What makes it special as a dog-friendly venue?

This opened recently in Canary Wharf and it’s already one of my favourite places. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by smiles and fuss from the staff – I have that effect on people! Dogs are allowed in every part of the bar and restaurant, and mum says the food and wine menu is exceptional – it includes lots of nice veggie and vegan options too.

I get a bit nervous in loud busy places so we try not to go in during the week at peak times. The best time for doggies is at weekends when Canary Wharf is nice and quiet, or mid-morning before the lunchtime rush. Locals can also get a loyalty card which gives hoomans money off at certain times, including 50% on Sunday evenings!

Why do you like Three Colt Gallery / What makes it special as a dog-friendly venue?

A lovely art gallery and coffee shop, I like sitting in the window surveying my kingdom and barking at unsuspecting dogs who dare to walk past. Well behaved dogs on leads are always welcome here. The Proprietor Georgina (or George to us regulars), curates regular exhibitions at the gallery and also sells ceramics, jewellery and other arts and crafts. And mum says George’s oat milk flat whites are the best in Limehouse. There’s also a jar of treats and a bowl of water for me and all my doggy friends.

If you go on a Saturday you’ll be able to sample a delicious selection of homemade cakes and savoury snacks made by George’s mum. Come early though – they usually disappear by midday!

Why do you like The Humble Grape / What makes it special as a dog-friendly venue?

Another new edition to dog-friendly Canary Wharf, I won’t let my mum walk past without dragging her in! Dogs are welcome inside the wine bar and restaurant, as well as outside on the terrace. I am always made a big fuss of by the friendly staff. I like to sit by the open kitchen window staring at the chef cooking meat, and if I’m lucky I sometimes get to try some of the menu!

I love sitting out on the terrace in the summer with my doggy friends. The terrace is right next to one of the old docks, so sometimes we get the chance to bark at passing swans and ducks.

Why do you like the Star of The East / What makes it special as a dog-friendly venue?

I love it here because it’s a proper dog-friendly pub (as opposed to ‘dog tolerant’). The staff are always pleased to see me and spoil me rotten. I also get lots of attention off the customers so I’m in seventh heaven when I come here. There’s a treat jar on the bar and I can always get a bowl of water when I need it. Mum says she loves coming here because it’s friendly, relaxed and only yards from our front door!

In winter I like to sit by the fire in the ‘snug’ and in the summer I love to bask in the sun in the beer garden. If you’re looking for a proper dog-friendly East End local this is it.

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf and Limehouse - Yurt Café 1
Photo: @shabbaroonie

Why do you like the Yurt Café / What makes it special as a dog-friendly venue?

London’s only Yurt café (yes, a café in an actual yurt!) minutes away from Limehouse DLR and train station. It’s cosy in the winter with a wood-burning stove keeping us warm.  In the summer I like to sit outside and roll on the vast expanse of grass.

Any top tips for the Yurt Café?

It’s a lovely oasis of calm and tranquillity in East London, but it can get quite crowded at the weekends. My mum likes to go early on a Saturday or Sunday morning and have a yummy veggie breakfast before it gets too crowded. I like sitting under the table catching the crumbs.

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf & Limehouse Hattie’s Tip #6

Name: Café Brera Riverside
Address: 31 Westferry Circus, Canary Wharf, London E14 8RR

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf and Limehouse - Cafe Brera Riverside 1

Why do you like Café Brera Riverside / What makes it special as a dog-friendly venue?

I love coming here for morning coffee and a croissant (mum eats the croissant, I eat the crumbs). If I’m a good girl I sometimes get some pancetta as a treat off the dog-loving staff. Everyone makes a fuss of me and we can stay as long as we like – I often fall asleep dreaming of chasing squirrels while my mum does some (boring) work.

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf and Limehouse - Cafe Brera Riverside 3

Any top tips for Café Brera Riverside?

In the summer the outside terrace is a sun-trap and has the most spectacular views over the Thames and London. And the lunchtime menu includes lots of lovely Italian salads and bowls of pasta, with plenty of veggie options too.

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf & Limehouse Hattie’s Tip #7

Name: Brewdog Canary Wharf
Address: 2 Churchill Pl, Canary Wharf, London E14 5RB

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf and Limehouse - Brewdog 1

Why do you like Brewdog/ What makes it special as a dog-friendly venue?

The clue is in the name! I love going to this super dog-friendly restaurant in the heart of Canary Wharf. I get treats, doggy beer and lots of attention whenever we go in. Mum says the names of the veggie food on the menu make her laugh, especially a veggie hot dog called Soy Division and the Heil Seitan burger.

Dog-friendly Canary Wharf and Limehouse - Brewdog 2

Any top tips for Brewdog?

Like most places in Canary Wharf, it gets super-busy during the week with all the people working in the area. But weekends are nice and quiet – perfect for a noise-sensitive dog like me!
