For this week’s episode of My Dog Friendly London – London by London Dogs feature we are headed to the Royal Arsenal Riverside in Woolwich, South East London with ‘Coolwich pup’ (more on that in a mo’), Amber the Cav Repawter.
Amber is the sweetest girl who takes her ‘Coolwich Repawter’ job very seriously. Amber was also our host for the Greenwich part of our recent London Dogs of Instagram Meetup and did a pawsome job there too.
The Royal Arsenal at Woolwich in South East London is famous for defending the interests of England since the 1600’s and recently commemorated an incredible milestone of being 500 years old. So what better setting for the backdrop to our next My Dog Friendly London – London by London Dogs feature than one so steeped in history.
There are even some historic landmarks on Amber’s Coolwich list for her My Dog Friendly London mini-guide to dog friendly Woolwich, let’s see where Amber will take us…
Please introduce yourself:
I’m Amber, I’m 1 year and 4 months and live in South East London.
What’s your favourite London Park and why?
I love Greenwich Park. It is quiet during the week and there is so much to see. Greenwich Park is steeped in history. It has the Royal Observatory which sits on a hill looking over the River Thames. It is the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the Prime Meridian of the world and London’s Planetarium. There is also The Rangers House and a very pretty Rose Garden which I like to sit in as it is very beautiful and calming. As it is half way round from where we start, it usually means we have a pit stop, with water and maybe a bit of roasted fish tails (sounds delicious, I hear you say!).
The park also runs alongside the National Maritime Museum, The Queens House and The Old Royal Naval College. Sadly these places are not dog friendly, but just being able to see them is enough for me as it makes for a very interesting walk. My walks are very gentle and calming for the most part as I like to take in the scenery, smells and meet and greet new people.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a fun-loving, puppy around town. I love spreading happiness, kindness and love wherever I go. I have recently become a Pets As Therapy Dog, for which I am very proud and look forward to meeting lots of new people to bring a smile to their faces and give them a lovely warm feeling in their hearts.
I also enjoy finding new dog friendly places and finding out about new historical places to visit or pass by. I am also known as the #coolwichpuppy and am linked to @coolwich on Instagram which promotes all that is cool from Woolwich. See what they did there!

Name: Boulangerie Jade
Address: 9 Major Draper St, Woolwich, London SE18 6GD | Website
Why do you like Boulangerie Jade / what makes it special as a dog friendly venue?
This is a very dog friendly French Cafe, Patisserie and Bakery in The Royal Arsenal Riverside. Owned by Christophe Le Tynevez- Dobel whose team made it to the Final of the Bake Off Creme de la Crème 2016. The staff are always so happy to see me and other doggy friends and of course our pawrents. They always provide water in a doggy bowl and lots of strokes, always making sure they wash their hands before serving the food. They serve delicious hot food, their brunch menu is fabulous and you can get amazing bread and cakes.
The cooked breakfast is very good, but my Sophie’s favourite are the pastries (Croissants, Pain au Chocolat, Pain au Raisin, Brioche) freshly made each day. ( By the way I didn’t really eat the cake, but I would have if I’d had my way. It looked, smelt and I was told tasted delicious!!)
Any top tips for the venue?
Brunch stops being served at 4pm on a Saturday an 3.30pm on Sunday, but that is another great excuse to go after or stay longer and have a delicious cake and tea. Weekends are very busy as it is so popular and if you can’t get a table inside or out then you can always take your bread, pastries, cakes home with you. They taste as delicious in situ or at home. They have branches at the Blackheath Standard and East Dulwich that are dog friendly as well.

Name: Con Gusto
Address: 54 Number One Street, Woolwich, London SE18 6ST | Website
Why do you like Con Gusto / what makes it special as a dog friendly venue?
Con Gusto is a small, Italian restaurant on the Royal Arsenal Riverside. Housed in a grade II listed former guardhouse, first built in 1815. The restaurant is dog friendly outside and they have a very nice terrace. The restaurant is also dog friendly, but because the restaurant is such an intimate space, it is up to the discretion of the owners whether there is enough space for doggies to go inside. So it is always best to ring in advance and find out if any other doggies are going to be present. Because of the size of the restaurant I would also advise making sure all doggies who go are well-behaved.
My pawrents have informed me that the food is simply divine and that the it’s worth visiting simply for the Tiramisu. I think you can see a theme here, in that my Sophie has a bit of a sweet tooth.
Con Gusto is so worth visiting, the location is fantastic and it has an open kitchen so you can fully enjoy the delights of the cuisine and can watch the chefs while they work.
Any top tips for the venue?
Con Gusto is closed on Mondays. I would book in advance as it gets busy and just mention you have a four-legged friend. They are very friendly and will do anything they can to reserve you a table. Enjoy this delicious Italian gem.

Why do you like The Guardhouse / what makes it special as a dog friendly venue?
As the name suggests, this pub is set in an old guardhouse, which forms part of the Royal Arsenal History. The Guardhouse is incredibly dog friendly. Every time I go I am given my own dog bowl with water and I am always given a side plate with a few doggie biscuits. The staff always love coming to say hi and giving me a stroke and cuddle. In fact they often stop to have a chat and say how it makes their day to have dogs in the pub.
There are several different spaces in the Guardhouse where you can sit and dine. A large dining area with a bar looking out on a veranda, a bright and airy restaurant situated in the glasshouse and a classically designed Officers Mess with large comfy armchairs and it’s own private bar. The Officers Mess has a log fire during the winter months, so is a perfect place to shelter from the cold weather. All are dog friendly and so depending on where my pawrents wish to sit, depending on their mood and whether they want food or simply a drink, I can always find a comfortable place to settle. There have been times when I have sat on the armchairs and bar stool as you will see.
My pawrents have always enjoyed the food. Good pub food is how they describe it and they do a very nice roast on a Sunday. They also have some nice cocktails, which makes for a fun time.
Any top tips for the venue?
It does get busy at the weekends, so if you want to get a table, I’d advise booking in advance. You can do this online. They are very dog friendly so you don’t even have to let them know as you will always be welcome.

Why do you like The Dial Arch / what makes it special as a dog friendly venue?
The Dial Arch is very dog friendly. As soon as you enter there is a little blackboard, at a pawfect height for me to read, telling me that I can help myself to dog biscuits from a small panier. I have to say I like going in there and if I can I always vere to the panier to get a biscuit, although I do admit that my pawrents are the ones who give it to me.
There are several areas in the pub, the booths, main dining/seating area with a nice fire for the winter months and a few separate rooms which are all dog friendly, so there is a lot of choice. There is a more formal restaurant, but my understanding is that dogs are not allowed in there. To be honest it doesn’t matter as there is so much space available as you will see. There is also a large outside area which has heaters and parasols so you can go out there in pretty much all weathers.
The beautiful and historic building offers up a comfortable and elegant haven, set in unique surroundings and this is one of the reasons we all like to go here.
Any top tips for the venue?
The food is very nice and they have a good selection and do very nice pizzas as well. They also play really good music and do have live bands on every now and again and a pub quiz on a Sunday at 8pm.

Why do you like The Taproom / what makes it special as a dog friendly venue?
The Taproom in the Royal Arsenal is a very chilled place to go for local craft beers, soft drinks, really good sourdough pizzas, sharing plates, wine, cocktails and snacks. It is dog friendly inside and outside, it is the kind of place you go as a local, to relax, catch up with friends and where locally brewed craft beers are served. How exciting is that.
Hop Stuff Brewery was born out a drive to make craft beer more approachable. Since opening in 2013, the Brewery has had three successful rounds of crowd funding, gained over 1,300 beer-loving investors, opened three Taproom bars and continues the pursuit to make craft beer simple and fun. I always enjoy going here as we can all get comfy and forget about the real world whilst chatting to people we have got to know whilst living close by.
The staff are always very friendly and fun-loving and I am always made to feel very welcome and can go wherever I like. Well not behind the bar or in the kitchen!!
Any top tips for the venue?
The Taproom is quite small and gets busy at weekends, so not always the best place for doggies inside, but if you feel up to it, you are always welcome. The rest of the time it is a little haven, that is still hidden away, a real gem.
