I love supporting London dog brands, especially when their products are gorgeously stylish. And that’s just what the dog portraits created by London-based artist Rebecca Harrison are.
The portraits immediately caught my eye when I first met Rebecca putting up a display of her work in a new London groomers, Masters Touch. Then after checking out Rebecca’s instagram, I fell in love even more with her stylish yet fun designs.
I’d been thinking about getting Belinha’s portrait done for a while so when Rebecca offered to collaborate and draw Belinha, I said yes…we’d love to! In my opinion, Rebecca’s dog portraits are a perfect treat to treasure either as a dog mama present to yourself or for somebody else. So here’s how Belinha’s portrait came to life…
From Photo to Stylish Dog Portrait…
The first step in creating your dog’s portrait is to select a photo that you like. Sounds simple right? Turns out I found it ridiculously difficult to choose just one photo of Belinha for her portrait. Rebecca is very used to this however, so I sent Rebecca a shortlisted selection of pictures to get some advice on which one would work well as a dog portrait.
In the end, with Rebecca’s help I chose this photo as it makes me smile and captures Belinha’s unique (and well-known) ears and smile.
Rebecca then got to work transforming the photo into a stylish dog portrait, capturing the transformation on video which is amazing to see how the portrait comes to life.
Rebecca explains the process: ‘Once we’ve chosen the photo, I’ll work on the drawing and when I’ve got it to the point where I’m happy with it, I’ll send it off for approval. If at this stage there are any small tweaks that are required then that’s the customers opportunity to let me know.
Once happy with the original, I will put the background on digitally and again we can play with the composition together if required. I will send over to the customer for approval before I send it off to print.
I offer a number of options on sizes of prints and framing. The original signed drawing is always done on A4 cartridge paper with black ink and you’ll receive this drawing along with the print. The two most common prints are a frame mounted 8×10” print ready to frame or an A3 print. I can frame both of these options and if requested print up to A1 in size which looks quite cool if you have the space to hang it on a large wall!’
Belinha’s portrait was soon ready and I was over the moon with Belinha’s A4 original signed drawing and A3 print. It certainly does put a smile on my face every time I look at it which is what the real-life Belinha does every time I look at her…so thank you!
Of course I had to show it to Belinha (yes, crazy dog mama status fully achieved I hear you say). Belinha did seem very interested so maybe she could recognise herself (or at least I like to think she could).
When A Dog Portrait Just Isn’t Enough…
You can never have too many things with your dog on them in my opinion. So when I realised Rebecca could put the portraits on cards, of course I had to order some of those too. Again, Rebecca was super helpful in suggesting options and we decided on two sets of cards, one with a red bow tie to keep it feeling festive and one without.
Whilst Rebecca has a range of ready-made cards by dog breed available, personalised cards are only available to those who have commissioned a dog portrait and come in a box of 8 x A6 cards, perfect for any occasion. I certainly will be sending mine far and wide as one proud dog mama!
Rebecca Harrison Designs | Refreshingly Real and Personal
I was so impressed with Belinha’s original signed drawing and dog portrait print, as well as the personal level of service that Rebecca clearly prides herself on. Rebecca is lovely to deal with and communicated regularly throughout the process, even arranging to drop off the print and cards personally and then the frame when I decided to buy one of those too!
Rebecca also makes sure her business is sustainable. The products are made with FSC approved papers, recycled card is used wherever possible and other essentials such as envelopes are recyclable too.
All of which gets a BIG paws up from us.
