The summer heatwave may officially be over but summer is still with us when you step outside. At first glance, the weather may look like it’s returned to the norm of an English summer but don’t be fooled, the sun can still pack a punch just in stealth mode. Plus rumour has it that an Indian Summer is coming, starting this weekend. So, to celebrate what a pawsome summer it’s been, we caught up with London’s dog-friendly holiday connoisseurs PetsPyjamas as well as Pet Teezer (which just happens to be one of our favourite pet products to have launched this year), to get their top tips on how to keep your dog cool in the last of the warm weather for this year.
And so we (well you), can see out the rest of summer in style, we’ve got a fantastic Summer £100 Prize Giveaway lined up where one lucky pup will take home £100 in prizes – £75 in vouchers to spend on goodies from PetsPyjamas AND a Pet Teezer grooming brush set to make sure coats are tip top (and tangle free) for any last days of summer adventures you’ve got planned. We’ve picked out our favourite pet products for keeping cool with warm weather in mind and oh, ok so a couple of others may have snuck in there too but that’s the fun of putting together a wish list right?!
Back to those tips, first up let’s hear from PetsPyjamas and their Veterinary friend Dr Marvin Frith on their top tips on how to keep your dog cool in warm weather and any more hot spells…
How to Keep Your Dog Cool in Warm Weather | Tips from PetsPyjamas
Hydration, hydration, hydration
This may seem like an obvious one but when out and about make sure you take some essentials to ensure your pup has plenty of access to water. At home, think of novel ways in which to help your dog maintain hydration. This could include using slightly more ‘wet’ food or producing ice treats such as frozen chicken stock ice cubes, which are both cooling, tasty and will provide some electrolytes that should also make your dog drink more. Our pick for this tip are the sleek new H2O water bottles with the lid that doubles as a water bowl to make it easy for your pup to drink from (see our product picks below). Plus, you can get a matching sling to make it easier for you to carry too.
Take extra care with Golden Oldies
Dogs who are elderly, with chronic disease or on medication may also find it difficult in hot weather to regulate their temperatures. Now that Belinha is firmly in the Golden Oldie category, even though she’s still a Brazilian babe at heart, I’ve definitely noticed that she is able to handle the heat less which has needed some adjustments both in things we do and products we buy. This summer the products we have found most useful are definitely those that are or can double as, some form of cooling mechanism. Think the Ruffwear cooling coat or Neoprene harness that can double as a cooling harness.
Avoid daytime travel where possible
Cars and public transport become rapidly hot even on a cloudy day and with a built-in fur coat, dogs are already at a disadvantage! Dogs are not able to sweat in the same way as us and rely on panting to cool down, so travelling puts a dog under unnecessary stress. If you must travel with your pet, make sure you have a bottle of water and a collapsible water bowl to hand. Or as mentioned previously, a cooling vest is also great for your dog to wear on the go.

As for the fur coats, imagine if we had to wear one of those in summer! We can’t change that for pups, but we can make sure coats are in top shape to cope with warm weather. Pet Teezer who launched earlier this year with two specialised grooming brushes for pets based on the life-changing (I can personally vouch for that) detangling hairbrush for humans, has these tips courtesy of their grooming expert Daniela Forshaw…
Keep your dog’s undercoat in check
The warmer temps increase shedding and a loose undercoat is a trap for bacteria and can contribute to overheating. Whether a heavy shedding breed such as the Golden Retriever or Pomeranian or light (Labradoodles, Shih Tzu’s, West Highland Terriers etc), the PetTeezer DeShedder will keep rogue fur at bay.
Keep your dog’s coat tangle free!
Tangles can easily turn into matting, which can cause skin irritation, restrict body movement and is uncomfortable to undo. The Pet Teezer De-Tangler will keep your dog’s locks flowing free! Top tip – if your dog has enjoyed playing in water and got muddy/sandy, use your Pet Teezer while the fur is still wet to draw out any dirt and water. Tangled wet dirty fur will turn to matts if left to dry without brushing.
Groom regularly (two to three times a week)
This will not only keep their fur tip top but help spot any hidden problems brought on by the summer season such as grass seeds, ticks and fleas.
